We invite you to a piercing and captivating performance “A Streetcar “Named Desire”” staged by the National Academic Drama Theater named after Lesya Ukrainka. This is a world theatrical classic, a deep psychological drama about the complex world of human feelings, traumas, and internal conflicts. This production will surely leave a mark on your heart.

A story about the clash of worlds and characters

The play “A Streetcar “Named Desire”” by NADT – is an adaptation of the eponymous play by the outstanding American playwright Tennessee Williams, awarded the Pulitzer Prize for it. This story has endured many theatrical productions worldwide and successful film adaptations (one of which won the “Oscar”). The author himself called it “a plea for the understanding of delicate people” – and this very intonation is felt in every scene of the production.

At the center of the performance's plot – are two sisters, Blanche and Stella DuBois, whose life paths once diverged drastically. Blanche, the elder sister, remained in the family estate, trying to preserve remnants of the past, while Stella chose a new life beside Stanley Kowalski – a rough, straightforward man with a military past.

And here is Blanche DuBois, elegant, fashionable, and wealthy, deciding to visit her younger sister who lives in the slums of New Orleans. Her appearance becomes a point of tension: her refinement, manners, and inner illusions sharply contrast with the harsh reality of post-war life. Gradually, the living space fills with conflicts where not only characters but different ideas about the past, dignity, truth, and survival collide. The audience along with the characters tries to understand: where is the boundary between reality and self-deception?

A performance that touches something deep inside

The production stands out with concise scenography, where a minimum of decorations only enhances the emotional tension between the story’s characters. The space transforms along with the internal state of the characters, and the main emphasis shifts to the acting – intense, frank, and sometimes painful.

In the play “A Streetcar “Named Desire”” there is nothing superfluous – only raw emotions, reflections after what has been experienced, trauma, and violence breaking out. This story explores the fragility of the human psyche and at the same time speaks about universal things: love, loneliness, and the fear of being misunderstood. It is a deep dive into the inner world of a person, where each viewer can recognize something of their own.
