The ballet “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors”, with music by Ivan Nebesny and libretto by Vasyl Vovkun, unfolds the familiar tale of Ivan and Marichka from hostile Hutsul families through the language of modern dance. It is a poetic narrative about love that transcends earthly bounds, about the struggle of light and darkness, man and nature, reality and myth.
The ballet “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” has several reasons for its incredible popularity:
- unique choreography by Artem Shoshin, which organically combines classical ballet with elements of modern and contemporary dance;
- the exquisite music of Ivan Nebesny, blending modern symphonic sound with Ukrainian authenticity – featuring kolomyika motifs, choral parts, and folk intonations;
- stunning scenography created by Lithuanian artist Arvidas Buinauskas. Minimalist constructions, lighting effects, shadow play, and the use of water create a multidimensional stage space where the Carpathians appear not only as the setting but as a distinct symbolic world;
- original costumes by Natalia Mishchenko, giving traditional Hutsul attire a contemporary designer interpretation.

The premiere of the ballet at the Lviv Opera took place in December 2023 and became a true artistic event, each performance selling out “sold out”. The production quickly became the hallmark of the Lviv National Opera. And now it has finally reached the Kyiv stage at the –Palace of“Ukraine”.
The ballet “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” presented by the Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Solomiya Krushelnytska – represents a new level of Ukrainian ballet art. It is not just a staged embodiment of literary classics but an emotional and visually stunning journey into the world of Ukrainian culture, which every fan of contemporary theater should see.

Балет Івана Небесного «Тіні забутих предків» - історія про кохання земне та небесне за легендарною повістю Михайла Коцюбинського на музику Івана Небесного та лібрето Василя Вовкуна.
Поетична оповідь на межі реальності та легенди, дійсності та фантазії постане перед глядачем у модерновій візії міжнародної команди постановників. Відома історія кохання Івана та Марічки з двох ворогуючих родів втілиться у неокласичній хореографії балетмейстера Артема Шошина. Видовищна сценографія литовського митця Арвідаса Буйнаускаса переносить героїв у сучасний постмодерністський світ та є філософським переосмисленням місця людини серед природи. Художні образи персонажів балету довершать костюми Наталії Міщенко, що пересотворюють гуцульське вбрання від автентики до модерних зразків.
