The legendary “Solaris” in the language of contemporary ballet
The ballet to the music of Oleksandr Rodin and libretto by Vasyl Vovkun transports the audience to the mysterious planet Solaris. Here people face not only the unexplored Cosmos but also their own memories, fears, and deepest feelings. The well-known science fiction plot acquires a new artistic expression thanks to the unparalleled choreography of Kateryna Kurman, who turns complex philosophical ideas into the expressive language of plasticity and movement.
A very talented team worked on the ballet “Solaris”. Here everything deserves attention. There is the libretto, which differs quite significantly from the original source, and the music of Oleksandr Rodin, which changes tempo along with the development of the plot: from intense dramatic scenes to almost meditative episodes.
The scenography by Svitlana Reinish also deserves special attention. There are digital projections of the Earth and the mysterious planet Solaris, large cubic constructions, and giant round portals. And the costumes for the production combine futuristic motifs and symbolic features of tribalism. They emphasize the idea of the invariability of human nature even in a world of high technology and cosmic discoveries. You definitely have not seen such a masterful adaptation of Stanisław Lem before!
