Shevchenko's classics in a modern sound

The opera “Kateryna” – is an original project of the Odessa National Opera, the premiere of which took place in the fall of 2022. Now Kyiv theatergoers and guests of the capital have the chance to appreciate this outstanding production, which received the opera “Oscar” at the “International Opera Awards” ceremony.

The music and libretto for the opera “Kateryna” were created by the contemporary Ukrainian composer Oleksandr Rodin. The production is based on the plot of Taras Shevchenko’s poem of the same name, as well as motifs from some of his other works (“Haidamaky”, “Prayer” and others).

The production team reinterpreted the classic story known from the school curriculum, creating a multidimensional stage space where different time layers, symbols, rituals, and mystical images intertwine. Just worth mentioning are the seven characters of the classic folk Christmas-New Year's crib (Death, Devil, Witch, Gypsy, Innkeeper, Angel, and the bard Perebendya), who actually tell the complex life path of the main heroine.

The opera “Kateryna” – is a story about love and betrayal, despair and thirst for life, moral choice, and human dignity, which sounds especially relevant today.

This is one of the most large-scale productions in the theatrical history of independent Ukraine. More than a hundred performers appear on stage simultaneously, creating a powerful emotional canvas. Among other features of the opera “Kateryna” are:
