Kyiv Academic Theater of Young Spectators on Lypki
In the very heart of Pechersk, among the quiet streets of the historic Lipki district, is the Kyiv Academic Theatre for Young Audiences on Lipki, a unique place where the traditions of the past and contemporary art meet, and fairy tales come to life before the eyes of young viewers and adults alike. This theatre has an extraordinary history that dates back to 1924, and today it remains a centre of aesthetic education and creative inspiration.
100 years of artistic magic for young audiences
The theatre was founded on 9 November 1924 by a group of enthusiasts, including prominent figures of Ukrainian culture: Iryna Deeva (the first female director in Ukraine), Oleksandr Solomarskyi (the first director of the theatre), Ilya Vilenskyi (music director) and Oleksandr Korniichuk (writer and head of the literary department). Their passion for the arts was the driving force behind the productions that have captivated audiences to this day.
The first performance of the theatre was Mowgli by Rudyard Kipling. This performance marked the beginning of a long journey of the theatre, which eventually became one of the leading centres of children's and youth theatre in Ukraine.
Even during severe trials, such as the Second World War, when the theatre building was destroyed in 1941, the team continued to create. After the theatre was rebuilt, it revived with renewed vigour and gained well-deserved recognition.
A special space for every spectator
The uniqueness of the Lipki Theatre lies in its ability to satisfy the interests of viewers of all ages:
- Children can enjoy fairy tale-based performances and colourful productions that develop their imagination and create magic.
- For teenagers, staging of classic works from the school curriculum in a modern reading that encourages reflection.
- For adults, performances that reflect deep life values and topical social issues.
The theatre collaborates with the best directors, artists and actors in Ukraine. Among the prominent names who have left their mark on the theatre's creative heritage are Ambrosiy Buchma, Kazimir Stanislavsky, Vasyl Tatlin and many others.
The Kyiv Academic Theatre for Young Audiences on Lypky is more than a theatre. It is a place where art comes to life, where every performance turns into a holiday for the soul. We invite you and your children to join this magic!
